You could use in-game currency to purchase upgrades and “parts” to customize the look and stats of the vehicle. Making Donkey Kong’s inclusion into the series special to fans, as opposed to being a disposable character with generic attacks. Like with Donkey Kong, you can upgrade his bongo attack to summon Diddy Kong, who flies around taking out enemies with his peanut pop-guns. Using in-game currency, you can buy all sorts of character-specific attacks. Throughout the game, players can obtain different hats that increase specific stats related to that character, such as HP and attack. ![]() Characters can level up rpg-style with 20 being the max level. Surprising to me was the amount of customization available to Skylanders as well as the vehicles. It almost felt like a souped-up version of Donkey Kong 64, and that made the experience much more sweeter. My personal favorite was just exploring the stages and beating up enemies. The vehicle segments were ok, I enjoyed the racing elements and some of the boss battles were fun to play. Regardless, you can still play through the game, without going out and buying all the extra peripherals. Donkey Kong’s Barrel Blaster is a land vehicle so, I couldn’t try out the sea and sky specific levels. The types of vehicles included are land, sea and sky. But Superchargers’ main gimmick is its new vehicle centered gameplay that ranges from kart racing to demolition derby-style gameplay where the object is to take out enemy vehicles. There’s even an in-game card battle minigame called “Sky Stones” that was surprisingly deep and lots of fun to play. Gameplay is a hybrid of platforming, beat-em-up, puzzles, light dungeon crawling, and some cool 2D side-scrolling areas thown in. Looking at the Skylanders imdb, the series is filled to the brim with known voice-acting talent from Billy West (Futurama, Ren and Stimpy) to Tom Kenny (Spongebob). Those are just the couple that I recognized. Patrick Warburton (Family Guy, Emperor’s New Groove) Lends his voice to Flynn. Richard Steven Horvitz (Invader Zim, Angry Beavers) provides his voice to series antagonist Lord Kaos. You can tell this is a big-budget title and that Activision went all out to make it stand out as much as possible.Īnother thing that impressed me as a first time player was the voice talent. Everything about it feels right at home on a Nintendo console. It feels like playing through a Dreamworks animated film. Everything is super detailed and colorful. Since I was more interested in playing as Donkey Kong, poor Stealth Elf was forced to cheer on the sidelines. ![]() I picked up the Wii U starter pack that included Donkey Kong, his “Barrel Blaster vehicle, and Super Shot Stealth Elf. 74.99 was a heck of gamble for an amiibo, but you only live once right? Worse case scenario, if the game was bad, I at least got a cool amiibo out of it I could use for other games on the console. When Nintendo announced that the Wii U version would receive two exclusive characters in the form of Bowser and Donkey Kong, I took the bait. It came off as a little too gimmicky for me, personally and outside of being a spin-off of the classic Spyro the Dragon series, nothing stood out that made me want to try it. Until Superchargers, I had never played anything the Skylanders series had to offer. (Originally posted on The Irate Gamer Oct-23-2015)
